Understanding File Extensions
Whether you’re new to computers or have been using them for years, one of the most common and frustrating problems that can arise are problems with a File Extension. There are two main reasons that these extensions can become a problem. Understanding why they are a problem is the first step to avoiding issues in the future.
The first way that people can have trouble with a particular File Extension is when the program is set up as the default program to read a particular extension. For example, if you have a photo viewing program set up as the default to read a text document, you will get an error message when you try to view that text document. Therefore, it’s important that you have the right program set up to read each type of file.
The opposite scenario is when you don’t have any program at all set up to read a particular type of File Extension. When this happens, your computer won’t have the first idea what to do when this extension comes up. If you don’t know which program should be opening it either, it’s likely that your file won’t get opened at all. This is, again, why it’s essential that your extensions are set up correctly.
